I realize this blog appeals to an international audience but every once and a while I have to do something for the town I live in (which then ties into this blog because of the people I've asked to write for it, the radio show on WIDR where you lot get your records played, and the circle continues).

So with that said THE GRAND REOPENING OF THE CORNER RECORD SHOP BEGINS TOMORROW! Yessir we've got a load of new vinyl, some drawings we're going to be doing, some awesome discounts... but most importantly I'm running their new blog! It can be found here at The Corner Recordshop!

For those of you in the Midwest (especially Michigan or South Western Michigan) I really suggest finding your way over here. We have gems that are priced to sell... things that would be crazy expensive on eBay and are considerably less here. Why? Because we aren't in Chicago and we know that times are tough... we want people to get the music they enjoy at a price they can enjoy as well. Why put up a mint copy of the Japanese import of The Doors LA Woman (complete with obi) for $40 (which is roughly what it's going for on the internet) when we can let someone pick it up for $19.99?

Anyway I'd appreciate it if you guys would follow that blog and stop in if you get the chance. And artists? You know you're being represented here as I'm asking for your records to be brought in so you can show some love too :)

A non-electronic post but whatevs...

I remember when the Nirvana box set came out I made my ex-girlfriend loan me the money, and drive me to Target (where it was cheapest; yes that was scummy, yes I payed her back)... I was so damn excited because there were just a handful of songs that hadn't been heard or were hard to get a hold of!

The real crown jewel for me however was "Do Re Mi" which was recorded 2 weeks prior to his death. It was a peak at what could have been a new chapter, a sound that hinted at his desire to work with Michael Stipe, and ultimately was the last thing he recorded (allegedly there is ONE copy with Eric from Hole, and Pat Smear, playing a more "rock-y" version from his home studio which we won't hear until like at least the 25 year anniversary?)...

...so anyway as soon as I heard the song I went from like super excited to suddenly weeping (I realize this is about as cool as telling you I love visiting nursing homes or someting)... and my ex said "What's wrong?" very sincerely... and I said "That's it. There isn't anything else left. Up til this point I've been able to say 'oh, there's stuff I haven't heard, this isn't over' but now it really is... this is the last of it... and now it has truly hit me that I will never hear another new Nirvana song."

I always wondered why people lose their shit when they are on like Cold Case Files and a bunch of bones come back to the family... I mean you knew they were dead! What's the big deal? Trust and believe I'm not saying that a song is like finding someone's bones, but in both instances it's an absolute end. You could subconsciously tell yourself "it's not over" up until that moment. When the final puzzle piece fits in it's heart breaking, even on a small scale level like a songwriter's last song.

So here it is in case you haven't heard it. It's haunting and beautiful and all those other words your expect for a final Nirvana song...

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Dani Deahl

Label owner, DJ, producer, and fashion icon Dani Deahl has provided us an amazing interview! I've been looking forward to this because I used to know Dani back when we were at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

I don't have a bunch of cool stories or anything... just normal college kid shit... like ... I actually almost made her fail a project where I stupidly suggested we create beanbags filled with Jello for our 3-D class lol... we had a lot of good times together... she helped me learn how to DJ (using the pitch slider instead of trying to adjust the record with your fingers, which she said she learned from Mark Almaria)... she later used my turntables for her brothers birthday party which, at least for me, turned into a very wild night where a drive by happened after I left the warehouse and then the cops tried to chase the suspect through a subway train I was on!?!?

I remember taking the bus with her up to Untitled and Gramophone Records (where she knew everyone lol) and I owe her a lot for what she taught me. She and I saw Roni Size together and had a wonderful time hanging out... and all this shit was so cool! But things kinda slowed down in our friendship shortly thereafter because I was suffering from HPPD and my life was essentially destroyed for a while... but even when I was barely able to function Dani would still have me over to chill at her house (despite the fact I was awful company) spinning records and playing Dope Wars on our Palm Pilots lol... I told you I have no real interesting stories... just some scattered memories :)

She is a really cool person and I think her success is sincerely deserved. She's living proof of what hard work will do for you and has helped raise Chicago's profile in the best way. She's the headliner for Lollapalooza's dance stage this year so go check her out!

THE BLOG QUESTIONS

How do you feel about the evolution of cyberspace and music (i.e. file sharing, free songs) and how do you think it will impact your music in the future?

I think people are realizing the importance of sharing music in some capacity. Lots of labels and artists are creatively working blogs into their marketing plans, from creating free bootlegs to tweeting for tracks and giving away radio edits. I still know some big artists who completely shun the blog world. I want to tell them - think of the impact all those fans have made who shared their music and created new fans who in turn attended shows, bought merch or wrote about them on Twitter or Facebook?

What advice would you give young producers who are still unsigned and are trying to get noticed?

It really is all about lots and lots of hours and work. A lot of people ask me…so…what do you do during the week? I’m working when I’m DJing and I’m working when I’m not DJing. Making demos, working on my blog, reaching out to promoters…there’s always a million and one things you can do to help boost your career. I tell people there is no magic solution – the answer is boring, work your ass off. Make demos and hand out hundreds of them, be diligent about the upkeep of your social media sites, run a blog, make free bootlegs and send them to DJs you like and to blogs, create a memorable image, be consistent.

Are there any artists out there that you feel are totally overlooked at the moment?

Not sure about totally overlooked, but there are definitely tons of people I think deserve a closer look. Lucky Date out of Chicago is an impeccable producer, Smalltown Romeo from Canada has made some incredible tunes like “Boom Ha” and Italy’s Barletta definitely has some exposure but in my opinion…not nearly enough. I would love to see him come to the States.

What work of yours are you the most proud of?

Musically, “Poppin Bottles”. Even with all the new tracks I’ve made (that will be released later this year), that was the one song that put me on the map, even though I had done singles, collaborations and remixes in the past. It came together so beautifully – the song was made in three hours flat, and Whiskey Pete’s lyrics didn’t need any rewrites. Everything dovetailed and people really responded to it, and the resulting video that we made.

Was there a moment where you felt like "I've made it"?

There have been several of those moments…I suppose because I always want to do better. The first time I toured outside of the country when I was in college I had a moment of validity, as well as the first time I released a track…the first time I played Lollapalooza, etc. This year I’m headlining a stage at Lollapalooza, and it’s the third time I’ve played the festival, so it was another milestone moment for me.

What else influences your art outside of music (i.e. books, movies, certain locations)?

Having a space where I feel calm. I love to read, I love the little tree lined street I live on, all the things I have in my house have an organic and nature-inspired feel to them. It’s my job to go out and make a party the best it can be – when I get home, the best thing for my creativity and well-being is to relax.

Was there ever a moment where you thought "maybe I can't make music a full time career"?

Never. I think it was the opposite for me…it was like, “wait, when did this become a career?” I mean, I was really doing it for fun in the beginning – I was seventeen and just genuinely loved the music and working at honing the craft. That love translated into it organically becoming a career. Now it’s a bit more complicated – I have an intern, someone who manages my social media and website for me, I travel much more often, etc. The rules have changed, but that love I started with is still there. That’s my keystone.

What is the best, or worst, gig you've ever played?

It’s hard to pinpoint the best – I have so many great memories…even recently. I played in Madison and two girls showed up with custom outfits that had my name in glitter, I was in Nashville and the promoter bought all these pink wigs and pink hairspray for everyone, I played Denver and the resident DJ and I got silly with a bottle of champagne, pouring it in everyone’s mouth and spraying it on the audience. The bad events are few and far between…they happened more often earlier in my career and now, not so much. There was one event I had to play for designer Zac Posen. I was given a Zac Posen dress to wear that belonged to a saleswoman at Saks, wasn’t given any shoes to match so I had to play barefoot (and was specifically told to not step out from behind the booth), and after prepping all the music, had Zac come over and give me his iPod to plug in and play from. Basically I was a paid mannequin.

Have there been any occasions where you have chosen not to work with an artist, or do a remix for someone, because it didn't fit with where you were going artistically?

Absolutely. I think one thing I've learned over the years is how important it is to say no. When I was first starting out, I said yes to everything and as time passed, what I said no to became just as important as what I said yes to. Everything I do has to be in line with who I am as an artist, and if that means passing up a good opportunity because it doesn't fit with my sound or image, then it's the right thing to do.

If you weren't doing music what would you be doing with your life ideally?

I’ve always said I’d probably be a chef, food critic or food stylist. I don’t think that’s much of a surprise to the people that know me!

What do you think the next thing is musically (genre wise, sound wise, anything)?

Man, I am just WAITING for moombahton to really pop. I’ve been in love with it since Dave Nada initially created it and I feel like I’m waiting for the rest of the world to hurry up and realize how amazing it is.

Man I really really love blogging... I wish that I could really turn my attention back to ISoA but for now? This blog has taken on a life of it's own. Even if I don't post tracks from all the promos I'm getting I end up with enough interviews to keep this thing interesting...

ON THAT NOTE... this interview turned out to be one of the most interesting ones I've read in a while. I always liked Mochipet but now I respect him as well.

The Blog Questions...

How do you feel about the evolution of cyberspace and music (i.e. file sharing, free songs) and how do you think it will impact your music in the future?

I think its closing doors but opening new ones as well. I think artists will have to get use to giving songs away for free but in return you gain more listeners on a grassroots level then you could ever have before without the internet and file sharing technology. I think it also opens up the arena for more experimentation of music. combining different styles and ideas together in a new way that hasn't been thought of before. Which is what I'm most excited about.

What advice would you give young producers who are still unsigned and are trying to get noticed?

share your music. if your music is good some people will like it. you just need to find those people and make it available to them.

Are there any artists out there that you feel are totally overlooked at the moment?

there are tons of overlooked artists. there always are. It's not a fair game and often people who know nothing about music can be the most popular of all. this is the phenomenon of the internet. there is no quality control. so it's left to the listener to judge. But the problem is in America there is no music education. No one knows how to appreciate intricate music. Cause we cut all our music programs in schools and community. There is so much good music out there that most people can't even understand cause they were never thought the vocabulary. That is why most of the music that is popular right now is the primal gut level music. Music that satisfies you primordially and temporarily. But it leaves much to be desired. If I ever get the chance and funding to I want to change this. I feel music is very important thing to have in our lives and we need to be educated about it. I feel like we can grow more as people and society if we understood the patterns of music. Most people think this is hogwash, but I believe in it.

What work of yours are you the most proud of?

I am proud of all my works for different reasons. But I feel like I still have a long ways to go in my music apprenticeship.

Was there a moment where you felt like "I've made it"?

There have been some awesome tours where I get to play in front of thousands of people and stay in fancy hotels in beautiful tropical beaches. But I don't think I've made it until I make the music that I really hear in my head. All the time.

What else influences your art outside of music (i.e. books, movies, certain locations)?

Everything influences me. But I think most of all people. different people, different lives, different locations, but all similar in some way. What do they say.. Music is Art and Art is the expression of the human condition.

Was there ever a moment where you thought "maybe I can't make music a full time career"?

Everyday, but you can't think about it. You just have to do it.

What is the best, or worst, gig you've ever played?

OK this wasn't my gig but my friend's band was asked to play in Mexico and they got to the venue and it was in front of a McDonalds parking lot. They proceeded to play the show since they were already in Mexico and afterwards when they were suppose to get paid the promoter said sorry I don't have any money but here is a 8ball of cocaine...

Has there been an artist, or a remix, you've turned down because it didn't fit with where you were going artistically?

All the time

If you weren't doing music what would you be doing with your life ideally?

Probably making noodles.

What do you think the next thing is musically (genre wise, sound wise, anything)?

If you mean the mass public, I have no idea. But probably something simple and sweet repeated over and over again until your sick of it and never want to hear it ever again.

I don't need to say anything about Emalkay... if you listen to dubstep you love this shit already... and if you don't listen to it I doubt you'll be able to resist this track! It features ISoA favourites She Is Danger's Lena Cullen on vocals. Here's a little info on her...

"Already hailed as "the Kate Bush of Dubstep" - Lena Cullen is a British multi-instrumentalist / producer / vocalist from London drawing on dubstep, dub, trip-hop, techno, electronica and dark wave in her work.

Known to many as one half of female dub electronica duo She is Danger, alongside rising supernova producer / DJ Maya Jane Coles; Lena has already made fans out of the likes of Adam F, Damon Albarn and Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja.

New D/R/U/G/S really fantastic...

Ok, I'll cop to the fact that I don't read a LOT of the emails I get. I don't follow up, I don't listen to the music, even if the email is really clever. WHICH IS AWFUL because I'm one of these pricks sending out emails trying to get noticed myself lol... But there is probably one good way to get a response... use words that your target audience can't ignore. Here, let me give you a list of three words that would make it so I couldn't ignore an email= Drugs, love, lust. See? Simple.

So when I got an email this morning that said D/R/U/G/S release free download of Love / Lust I thought, cue the music, "these are a few of my favourite thingssssss..."

So I checked out both the songs on dude's Myspace? They're solid. I really like both tracks and feel like he has great potential. At first I thought "I mean this is good but I'm not sure if it's great" and then I realized he was easily traversing the space between Swayzak style tech, Burial type atmospherics, and some mainstream dance production... which essentially means it's great lol. I will say, however, that I think I liked "Velodrome I" better than the catchy and perfectly named "Love/Lust". Tell us what you think!

Unless you you've been living under a rock (I can't make the Osama cave joke seeing as it turned out he was living in a villa lol) you know of The Chemical Brothers. We all know they're super awesome and release great records and are hard to be topped. They are at the top of their craft nearly all the time...........

...So when someone, like Jagz Kooner, pops up and dethrones them on a record with a much much much better mix you can't help but take notice. The track I'm referring to specifically is Primal Scream's "Swastika Eyes", a track that had two mixes on their XTRMNTR album... one was from the Chems, one was from Jagz... and if you compare the two Jagz mix really stands above without question! Take a listen...

It's important to note that's not the only awesome work Jagz has done... I mean he was in SABRES OF PARADISE for God's sake! So we are very very very proud to have this exclusive interview below! Big thanks again to a legend...

How do you feel about the evolution of cyberspace and music (i.e. file sharing, free songs) and how do you think it will impact your music in the future?

its a double edge sword, the positives are that its easy to track down (and find) your new favourite artist and find songs that are obscure but the downside is that once you have it will be far easier to just stream or download from a free site . this means that nowadays there is virtually no money to invest in new bands .for a bedroom producer or someone who puts tracks together in their laptops its not a problem but if you are a band and need to go into a studio its really difficult, hence the fact there is almost no big studios left (pretty much anywhere) as for the future , i think that the music "industry" will pretty much disappear in the next few years and it will be back to a cottage industry (like in the 50's) and then a whole new business model will emerge based on a direct connection with the artist you love and not via a industry hell bent on massive profiteering.

What advice would you give young producers who are still unsigned and are trying to get noticed?

Learn your Art/Craft(thoroughly!!) . dont follow the herd (do something new and original) . musically go with what your heart tells you, and not what is in the top40 this week or month. when you play stuff to other people always gauge their responses . it they are buzzing on the tunes and nodding their heads/ jumping around the room you're doing good. if they sit there and look at you like you're mad (and it happens quite often) then bear that in mind as you're not nailing the tunes you are making . they have to connect with people . it doesn't matter how intricate your hi hat pattern is if the tune is crap . no one will give a fuck and its far more important to make the songs memorable than the great tone of your kick drum that you spent ages doing.

Are there any artists out there that you feel are totally overlooked at the moment?

yes lots!! i keep getting sent so much great music from bands and artists and if they dont fall into the stereotypical pidgeon holes then they are normally left out in the cold by record companies/radio stations . The new Infadels album" The Future Of the Gravity Boy" produced by Alex Metric is just amazing!! everytime i play songs to people they are blown away by the production and energy of the songs , but it looks like it wont see the light of day .

What work of yours are you the most proud of?

i would have to say pretty much anything i've done with primal scream. i'm generally left to my own devices to do whatever i want and generally speaking they are always happy with the results. i'm also really proud of the royal trux mix i did as i was only 1 of a handful people they asked to remix them .

Was there a moment where you felt like "I've made it"?

i dont think ive ever had that thought in my head. My and my friends used to joke that you have officially "made it" when they play 1 of your tunes on the Juke Box in the Queen Vic on Eastenders! i have moments when i go see the bands ive worked with and see how the crowd reacts to the tracks i've worked on and that always puts a smile on face. going to Oasis at wembley was amazing. watching Reverend and the Makers and then Kasabian followed by Oasis infront of 80,000 people was pretty special for me as ive worked with all those bands . moments like that are pretty inspiring!

What else influences your art outside of music (i.e. books, movies, certain locations)?

i think its technology mainly . new bits of equipment/software toys really inspire me as i will always find a new way of doing something ive not thought about before.

Was there ever a moment where you thought "maybe I can't make music a full time career"?

yes , i have those moments all the time! i suppose its part of being creative, there are times when ive totally used up all my energy doing something and i actually have nothing left in me. its a bit like a comedown that lasts a lot longer than a few days. that and after my old bands the aloof and the sabres of paradise split around the same time and i was pretty much lost as to what to do next . there was a lot of soul searching that went on around that time, however i got a call from primal scream around the same time to make "Swastika Eyes" and thats how i got into production for other people. it all turned out nice in the end!

Has there been an artist, or a remix, you've turned down because it didn't fit with where you were going artistically?

yes loads and they shall remain nameless

The EP contains Carl’s recording of an unreleased Libertines track called ‘Grimaldi’, a new recording of ‘Death Fires Burn at Night’, a cover version of the Langly Sisters track ‘Sing For My Supper’ and ‘This Is The Song’ previously unavailable in the UK.
‘The Libertines – There Are No Innocent Bystanders’ is an all-access music documentary that spans the period of time from the announcement of their reunion to the weekend of Reading and Leeds Festival in 2010 where they played their biggest show to date. Filmed by long-standing collaborator Roger Sargent, it will be shown at The Troxy in Limehouse this week.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Larry Tee

Larry Tee has been a major driving force both behind the scenes and at the forefront of electronic music for a couple decades. You've undoubtedly come across his music whether you know it or not... a great example was his song "Licky (feat. Princess Superstar)" being played in a club scene during Russell Brand's Get Him To The Greek.

He scored his first mega hit producing Rupaul's "Supermodel" (which will be played from now until the end of time due to it's catchy perfection), and has many other accomplishments (engineering "Rock Lobster"), throwing legendary parties during the "Party Monster" era (there is a video of all the club kids together which includes a young Michael Alig on Youtube), and the genre defining Electroclash festival. He's had a #1 Billboard, he's launched more careers than you can imagine, and he's always pushing the music world further...

The Blog Questions...

How do you feel about the evolution of cyberspace and music (i.e. file sharing, free songs) and how do you think it will impact your music in the future?

well, it definately make the whole music world more democratic! gone are the awful a and r dudes that made music suck ay major labels, but then gone are the profits for a lot of music makers..i just think it means we have to fund new revenue streams for making music. making amazing videos is one way to get people in a new way. it already impacted my last album in that i used almost all internet stars...or people i found via the internet.

What advice would you give young producers who are still unsigned and are trying to get noticed?

unsigned...make your own label and get your own esthetic rocking. nobody is signing anything other than rihanna...get on the internet, make great music, give it away at first...best way to get out there. i have noticed its aleways the label owner NOT the producers that gets all the gigs and the money!

Are there any artists out there that you feel are totally overlooked at the moment?

OMG, so many...but its always been that way. singer songwriters with some authenticity are being overlooked.

What work of yours are you the most proud of?

well, my club badd album is my first record yet and im really proud of that one and can listen to it all the way through without cringing. but my new record has some moments that even out do that last one!

Was there a moment where you felt like "I've made it"?

well, wen i had my first amazing club night blow up in NYC, love machine, i was pretty excited! but its more likely that i feel 'when am i going to make it>?"i suspect i will feel that til the day i die...which is no time soon...hipe i dont drive people mad! hehehehe

What else influences your art outside of music (i.e. books, movies, certain locations)?

my magazine carnage is a great way for me to write about culture, art, fashion and music, so id say that makes me go out and discover new things i think are great. travelling is great for inspriration, and i get a lot of my trashy girl rapper ideas from riding the subway...or bus...

Was there ever a moment where you thought "maybe I can't make music a full time career"?

well, i have been blessed to have made my entire life out of music. i dont know what i did to deserve this amazing life but i thank my higher power every day!!!

What is the best, or worst, gig you've ever played?

the best gig was my electroclash festival in 2001 where i had peaches, fischerpooner, chicks on speed and ADULT wish me happy birthday. or perhaps when i played to nearly 300,000 people in the city center of santiago chile~ wow~
worst, OMG, i have so many rotten gigs but you just have to go through and know that there is some reason even for a bad gig!

Has there been an artist, or a remix, you've turned down because it didn't fit with where you were going artistically?

oh, yeah, all the time. bono, the jesus and mary chain, tina turner, the white stripes, elton john, celine dion, and frank sinatra....jsut kidding, i didnt turn them down. i prefer workgin with and discovering new artists but will consider anyone! i like the challenge of writing songs for a wide variety of artists....its a real challenge...and makin pop is really harder than most people think...

If you weren't doing music what would you be doing with your life ideally?

well, designing clothes or making magazine...actually i have my own magazine...but maybe do it for money! maybe be one of the chippendales?

What do you think the next thing is musically (genre wise, sound wise, anything)?

OMG< i dont know but i love glitchy electronic nonsense with beautiful melodies that make you wanna explode. or fatbottom bass-banging collages of sounds that throw visuals into your head quick and fast...

The Blog Questions...

How do you feel about the evolution of cyberspace and music (i.e. file sharing, free songs) and how do you think it will impact your music in the future?

a. I think free music is good when it was intended that way. I like that people want to give music away for free. I don't agree with suing people over 'stolen' music but I don't like to download 'illegally' myself. I think it cheapens the experience of listening to music when it becomes completely easy to obtain someone elses hard work by pushing a few buttons and without having to pay for it. But it's great when you can find something awesome and it costs you nothing. That is beautiful. It can be a good thing to make it accessible, but at the same time, discovering and following a band you love and collecting objects created in their honor is a cool thing. You have to hunt for it a little more but it makes it worth it.

What advice would you give young producers who are still unsigned and are trying to get noticed?

a. Make the music you want to make. Stay true to yourself. If you are trying to appeal to a label or artist, the goal should be to be 'you' to the best degree you are capable. You are your greatest asset. If you think a label might like what you come up with, send it to your favorite labels, but take your time with it and let yourself grow and innovate. You will get somewhere with your music if you are persistent, and just keep trying and stay open to opportunities. It might not be as huge as you want, but humility is important in life too. Try to work with other artists and at least make connections and friendships. Enjoy others and don't make it a competition. Try to do shows with a diverse local talent base so you are wiser for it. Those things will prepare you for a career in music if it is meant to be.

Are there any artists out there that you feel are totally overlooked at the moment?

a. Intricate Dialect from Detroit (http://soundcloud.com/intricatedialect). He's a brilliant writer, doing esoteric raps and always great energy on stage and recordings... (http://soundcloud.com/intricatedialect/when-u-c-me-feat-gen-pop-tenacity). All the Abolishionists are brilliant as well as Tree City. Baron Knoxburry out of Ann Arbor (http://b-knox.com/) (http://battleofthebits.org/barracks/Profile/Baron+Knoxburry/) he's like Aphex meets chiptunes meets hip-hop. He is a genius. He's got a whole website with a million chiptunes that programers around the world have created. There's also Charles Trees, A Setting Sun, Josef Deas, Davinci Green, The Barefoot Sneaker Slaves all great people and artists. Ann Arbor has it all! I also love The Trashcan Sinatras, one of the greatest bands ever. There's a lot of artists I know of creating great bodies of work that are lesser known. The thing about lesser known artists is that as a fan, you feel lucky for hearing the work they create. It's also a great thing to be able to share with others these special finds.

What work of yours are you the most proud of?

a. I rediscover my older works at different times and have different appreciation for the various modes I've worked in. I think I have trouble filtering my own artistic output. The best is finding something randomly on my hard-drive or a machine, putting it on a CD and going for a drive. Having a manager who combs through my work and finds the common spirit is invaluable to me. I am proud of my official releases because of the fact that someone has heard something that tied together the songs and made sense of it because I can't always do that. I want to keep moving and making more new music so I don't always tend to my output so well. It's a hindrance for me to analyze my own work that actually slows me down and it's a troublesome habit. There's already so much critical thought going into the pieces that to look at them afterwards and not just enjoy them doesn't move me forward. You also have to let go of being attached to your own work so you can flow into new projects.

Was there a moment where you felt like "I've made it"?

a. Early on being introduced to the label (Ghostly) there was a big sense of achievement that I had even garnered their attention. Knowing what to do with that attention was something else. There have been lots of moments of happiness and success relating to releasing music and having a career. My music on Adult Swim was also a good experience for me although I did keep a fairly down-played attitude towards the exposure. I hope people don't think I wasted that time in the lime light. I think also stepping out onto stages even just around Ann Arbor and Detroit was a feeling of achievement because early on I was very sensitive about the idea of performing.

What else influences your art outside of music (i.e. books, movies, certain locations)?

a. Ann Arbor is a hometown of inspiration. I like weather and nature as well. There's a cafe in Ann Arbor called Cafe Ambrosia which is a hot spot. I'm sad they cut down the tree there though. I like artistic works of fiction. James Joyce, C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Dostoyevski, Phillip K. Dick, Tolkien. Some newer fantasy by an author named David Eddings. Older work that has passed the test of time is attractive to me, plus things written in a place/time that is inaccessible to me is what I gravitate to. But I don't read enough and I need to borrow some books so I can branch out!

Was there ever a moment where you thought "maybe I can't make music a full time career"?

a I've had those feelings before but the truth is the only thing holding me back from my music career is myself. I have an opportunity to make something more out of my talent. I don't think there is a better fit for me than making music, or if there is, I am not at the stage yet in my life to recognize it. It's a matter of taking on new projects, working through them, and it will still be exciting.

What is the best, or worst, gig you've ever played?

a. Some of the best gigs have been small shows. Sometimes when I'm singing for people I really feel right with the world; that I'm doing the best I can musically. I also have had great times doing a live electronic tweaking/mixing set for people and those have been really good too. I like to combine both in my sets.

Has there been an artist, or a remix, you've turned down because it didn't fit with where you were going artistically?

a. Sometimes you get an opportunity to work with music and it doesn't fit. Luckily there hasn't been much pressure and the choice is up to me. I love remixing other artists though, and I wish I had more offers come up in my career and life. The line gets blurred though because I know such a wealth of artists that I would love to sample and re-work their work or collaborate. If you weren't doing music what would you be doing with your life ideally?

a. Some form of Asceticism, reading, and focusing on writing fiction or poetry.

What do you think the next thing is musically (genre wise, sound wise, anything)?

a. Maybe more bedroom producers learning new skills as far as traditional musicality is concerned, and combining that with the ability to make any type of music you want digitally. Maybe new strands of electronic music with really good elements like dubstep has came up. I think well designed hardware or hardware/software interfaces might really help some people along with performing work live.

I know I can speak for the whole Neon Lights Crew when I say that Prefuse 73 is an ALL TIME favorite for all of us. Guillermo Scott Herren's various albums as not just Prefuse 73, Delarosa & Asora and Piano Overlord (not to mention Savath y Savalas, Risil, and Diamond Watch Wrists).

I was lucky enough to hear Prefuse 73 when Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives came out (as I was volunteering at a college radio station and the album was in rotation) and I was immediately awaiting new material from him. I was anxiously awaiting every new album, project, and remix.

One of the most exciting works of Mr. Herren's is this remix for Via Tania which was played on nearly every episode of my old show Neon Lights.

It is a major privilege to have such a big name and a major talent grace us with his knowledge, so, without further adieu I give you our exclusive interview with Prefuse 73!

The Blog Questions...

How do you feel about the evolution of cyberspace and music (i.e. file sharing, free songs) and how do you think it will impact your music in the future?

I have no opinion abt. the future of: "cyberspaces" and do not care abt. "cyberspaces". No one listens to albums as a whole album vs. single mp3s. Therefore,I stopped being concerned several years ago about this issue.. There is a "content stream" to fish from. I feel as if people might as well find what they want to listen to and be content, happy humans on earth. As for me, I've had to find alternate avenues to make an income other than music. Thankfully, I can manage multi tasking. Like my present job at: "
Chik-Fil-A" (shit is delicious!)

What advice would you give young producers who are still unsigned and are trying to get noticed?

Make music the way it sounds in your mind, create it and make what sounds like "you". You'll never get rich off this shit unless you're willing to ride a label's"full on" exploitive intention. It's the same business as any business. You should just have love in what you create and help the people that are less fortunate than you. i.e: Help your friends from being homeless and becoming crack fiends.

Are there any artists out there that you feel are totally overlooked at the moment?

THE ENTIRE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS PRESENTLY OVERLOOKED. (NO GENRE EXEMPT) - except over managed "celebrity d.j.s"
that continue to make all music sound like shit.♥♥ them.
-why they "produce" music? I have no idea?... this should be an inspiration for younger producers to "shine"...

What work of yours are you the most proud of?

I hate all the trails I left behind me musically. I'm more happy listening to other people's music... I'm only propelled by moving in a forward motion. I can not live in the past.
my past is pretty grim when I put it under a microscope....

Was there a moment where you felt like "I've made it"?

NO."I never made it..." -I'm still waiting to make it as a: "forensic investigator" not a musician.... I want to be the best at "that".... Music serves at a temporary massage of one's ego that involves a sense as if you're taking over the planet. 5 years later, the reality catches up to the ego. I pray that everyone doesn't "over extend" their welcome and continue to swim in their own self worth "forever"""""""".

What else influences your art outside of music (i.e. books, movies, certain locations)?

Trees,Sun, Meaningful conversation, photographs and my son: "Alejandro"....

Was there ever a moment where you thought "maybe I can't make music a full time career"?

I'm still making music over 10+ years and never feel like I "made it".. I make music b/c I love it. Yet my life is: "a full time struggle"....... I'm work in the fast food biz most days.
On weekends I get to work at an "art house cinema"...

What is the best, or worst, gig you've ever played?

Probably my best shows were in Italy honestly.... They show a whole lotta love.And I love them back.

Has there been an artist, or a remix, you've turned down because it didn't fit with where you were going artistically?

Many times, yes...

If you weren't doing music what would you be doing with your life ideally?

I'd be Fulfilling my "life goal" of being a forensic scientist and Living in a semi remote home by the sea with my kid in Spain, chilling with my father. Writing books and doing soundtracks(?)

Big surprise here! The biggest surprise, for me, is that I don't recognize all the remixers... and some of them seem to be odd picks? But ultimately they seem to know what they're doing so it should be a fun filled right.

Now I am one of these people who is a big proponent in artists making money through the best avenues possible for them. So like when Ghostly International's Midwest Product had their song "Swamp" in a Hummer commercial I was elated! Hell, it's impossible to sell records so why not right?

But what happens when you sell more records than just about anyone in the general field of "electronica"? What happens when you're Daft Punk? Is this still acceptable? The verdict is still out as far as I'm concerned... but gold and silver bottles? Do they say anything else on them? So we get anything cool out of this deal?

Today's post has been much anticipated by the crew. We've been putting the blade to the grindstone, just for you guys! Last Friday we had the chance to interview one of our favorites, Robot Koch, after the show he headlined with Madlib at 1015 Folsom, San Francisco. The half an hour we spent with Robert was much more like a bunch of friends hanging out rather than an interview, and we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time with such a cool dude.

City Full Of Neon Lights: Welcome to San Francisco! For our readers who are not familiar, please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

Robot Koch: Well, my name is Robot Koch, actually my name is Robert Koch, but Sacha from Jahcoozi (Sacha Perera) nicknamed me “Robot” because I tend to, you know work a lot, sleep a little…..very little, so that’s how that whole robot thing came about. What do I do? I am a music producer, I played drums in a band when I was 15, got into DJing electronic music when I was like, I dunno, 20? I’m 33 years now so I’ve been doing it for a second. I play all over the globe actually, I used to play a lot with Jahcoozi but I quit, well, I’m still their producer, but I don’t play live with them anymore because it just got too much for me, cause I have a lot of production things going on and just being on the road with them was intense also. And then I started my own thing and that sort of blew up as well, you know so I am just trying to balance it out, just concentrating on Robot Koch and like, all these studio jobs that I have.

CFONL; “Like all the side projects your working on?”

RK: “Right, cause I also do some like productions for some major labels.”

CFONL: Could you tell us about the side projects your doing?”

RK: Well it’s not really side projects, I’m like a music producer, I’m signed to Sony Publishing in Germany, and they give me like some jobs sometimes remixing bigger artists, European ones. I produce tracks for other people’s records also, that part of my job, how I live, but obviously Robot Koch runs well as an entity by now, you know? So I’m touring a lot, and, it’s cool, I like the duality of studio and live shows, you never get bored you know?

CFONL: Who are some artists that you have you have been feeling lately? Maybe some future collaboration in the works you could shed some light on?

RK: Actually what’s coming out in March on Project Mooncircle, the label I release on, is John Robinson, previously Little Science of the Science of life crew. He’s down with all the cats, he’s known in the scene but never really blew up that kind of……like MF Doom did or something.

CFONL: How did that collaboration come about?

RK: We met, we just played one show together, and then Gordon from our label was like “you guys should work on an EP”, and it blew up into an album size.

CFONL: So it will be an album not just an EP?

RK: Yeah it’s an album.

CFONL: When your working with other artists and doing their remixes, what are some of the obstacles you face if you are not working with them directly face to face in a collaborative project?

RK: Well both are really important you know, so the thing between me working as a solo artist and working with a band, even with Jahcoozi it’s like three people, three opinions, a lot of talking. What I love about my solo stuff, I just do (makes the music).

CFONL: You have the ability to do what you need with the sound.

RK: Totally. I do know when it’s finished also, you know. You don’t discuss when it’s finished you just feel it, and that’s cool you know, be at peace. With a band you’re always like “it’s not finished”, “yeah I think it is”, “we need to change this part.” But, having said that it’s obviously great working with people cause they feed the gene pool of ideas with their input, so it can also be bigger. That’s why I do both.

CFONL: It (working in a band) helps you think of things you wouldn’t have thought of before, you feed off each other.

RK: Exactly, people think differently you know, so that’s the good thing about it.

CFONL: There are a lot of people you work with we’ve never heard of before, how do you find these people to work with?

RK: I like to challenge people with that actually, new names, new sounds, like discover something. Like Grace, her full name is Graciella Maria, she’s a singer from Mexico, she’s my girlfriend actually, just some gossip for the blog you know!

All: Hahahahahahahaha

CFONL: You said you were in Portland last night, how was the show/venue?

RK: It was good, the venue was smaller so it was kinda packed out, but it was all good vibes from the start, people were feeling. I dropped “Hard to Find,” people were being crazy and shit. I felt it you know. Also there is this kind of hippy vibe sometimes, there was this girl that gave me this like stone….

CFONL: Crystal wrappers!

RK: Yeah something like that, I’m into that shit you know, call me esoteric but I love it

CFONL: How is the music scene/nightlife in Berlin different than here in the states?

RK: Well obviously a lot of people come to Berlin because they see it as the never stopping party, there’s no curfew like that club Bergheim is open like all the time, you can go there like three in the after noon and people are still there from two days ago. So that is one thing people come from abroad for. I don’t embrace that so much, I go to some after hours for a laugh after a good breakfast you know, see people pilled out whatever, like alright you know!!! It’s a cool city, it has a vibrant scene, different scenes, there’s techno, the whole East West thing.

CFONL: Yeah it’s got a lot of historical background, sort of like Detroit, where a lot of this music originated.

RK: Totally.

CFONL: It’s also like people making sense out of chaos, taking industrial failures and making them into amazing clubs.

RK: Yeah that whole DIY thing about it also, people just making things out of what’s there. And that’s cool about Berlin, clubs keep popping up and closing down.

CFONL: We constantly hear about people moving to Berlin, for instance Lando Kal….

RK: Yeah I know Kal and his girl Lynn, but we haven’t had a chance to hang out, we’re both so busy.

CFONL: I know you craft your magic in multiple styles of music including Barefoot, World Music 2.0, Dubstep & Post-Rock, do your methods change depending on the style of music you are making?

RK: Not really, because my style is always eclectic, it’s never really purely one thing, when I make a Dubstep track, well all my tracks have some dub element you know, like you call it Dubstep or whatever-step.

CFNOL: But more of like a production element?

RK: Yeah, it’s more like how I use sounds, the balance between digital and analog, which is important to me.

CFONL: I feel like you use a lot of elements, of just like (the sound of) breathing.

RK: I love that, I love the intimacy of sounds, but not just like voice, also synthesizers if you really compress some noise through filter sound. Just excerpt that very frequency and push it up, it becomes really intimate; you become really intimate with that sound.

CFONL: It’s like you become intimate with your machines…

RK: We’ll I’m not sure, that’s some fantasies of yours!!!

All: [Laughter!!]

CFONL: And making things that sound one way, sound completely different on record. A voice, just me breathing, isn't musical but you make it into a beat and I think that's amazing, almost magical.

RK: I think found sound is also important. I am into field recording, recording things and incorporating them, when I was in Mexico I did a lot of that like influenced music. And the world real is sound you know, its all there.

CFONL: What are some artist that you have found out about recently that really moved you and inspired you to get to your equipment and making something

RK: Well, obviously, James Blake is a big one for me right now. I can't help it you know?

CFONL: Obviously, right?! Fuck, obviously…….. right? Jesus.

RK: It is such a good record, but also the EPs he did before.

CFONL: CMYK.

RK: Yeah, Klavierwerke. That’s also my shit because he used the piano sound, the intimacy, it’s like the low end without having any of this like, Brostep…

CFONL: There’s no struggle to it, its very natural. You feel it, but it doesn't make you do something, doesn't make you go like this [makes bass face].

RK: Its not pushy you know, it’s subtle. I love the fact that it’s subtle.

CFONL: Is he [James Blake] really big in Berlin?

RK: I think he's blowing up.

CFONL: Is the Brostep scene have the same kind of following and hype in Berlin as it does here in the states?

RK: No, we have that with techno, big room techno. We have the cool minimal whatever and then you have the main room, which is like [?]. And that’s what I think Brostep is for Dubstep. It’s for 16 year old kids and shit.

CFONL: It’s like that first step you know? Which I think is not necessarily a totally bad thing because it brings people into the music… but for the wrong reasons.

RK: But then again, I have to tell you, I was having this discussion with Evan from Surefire Agency this morning. He said that its obviously inviting a lot of people who have never been into that kind of music towards its. Because it’s so easy to get…

CFONL: Accessible.

RK: A diluted, accessible version of it. But some kid who digs it and digs deeper might find some quality, so that’s just a door opener for them. Which is a good thing. Even for me as a producer, some major labels are approaching me now because of this Magnetic Man in the charts, which isn't Brostep, Katy B and shit you know. So they are coming to like, "your doing this 'Dubstep' right?" And if I can make a remix for them, which is cool because I do it my way, but the reason they ask me is only because there’s people like Skrillex, you know? Inside out about because he is on Deadmau5's label or whatever.

CFONL: So when you approach a remix, does the process begin with a dialogue between you and the artist or more between you and their record label?

RK: No, it’s different actually. With smaller artists its directly and with bigger ones its the management and the label. But I just wanted to say one thing about this Brostep, because how I flipped it recently. I was asked to do this remix of a major German artist, well you wouldn't know him but he is a platinum selling guy in Germany, never heard of him abroad but he is a big name there. So did the remix for him, and they kinda wanted the dubstep…

CFONL: The main room Dubstep hahahhaah….

[everyone laughs]

RK: But I made some proper, like, post 140 like, you know this kind of Martyn-esque, even like what James Blake was doing on Klavierwerke, some really subtle… and they were getting back to me going, "wow we didn't expect a chill out remix from you." I'm like, "Yo you gotta check that sub bass!!" Because if you check it on your fucking laptop speakers, that’s what these A&Rs do, and they are just hearing some pats and bleeps not one hundred percent of the track you know? I got so cracked up when I read that.

CFONL: The scary part is they heard Dubstep or Brostep on those speakers and think it sounds good, imagine what their ears hear, if they think that sounds good…

RK: That’s why they like Magnetic Man, because all they can hear is the mids so they think its like a rave or trance track. And the pop voice and trance beat. Its cool though, I'm not hating on it for the reason that if pop becomes better because of that.

CFONL: What if it makes this main stream Dubstep better? What if it becomes so accessible that all these different people, they have you make a "Dubstep" remix that they think is going to sound like Skrillex but actually sounds like ROBOT KOCH, obviously, so then these kids are like, "oh Dubstep remix! Oh, wait what is this? Its way better!"

RK: Exactly, I think its something you should see as a chance and to embrace it you know? And it puts pressure on the producers because they have to push it a bit harder, even the underground cats, because if what they do now becomes pop they have to keep pushing the limits and find the next new-new. So that’s how the whole evolution goes on, that’s why I call the whole thing "Next-Step" because its always the next step, its never defined, its liquid.

CFONL: Has is the music industry’s evolution effected the way you perceive being a musician? Specifically relating to the rapidly growing amount of overnight internet celebrities and the overall accessibility the internet allows.

RK: Well yeah, it all changed after the Internet. I'm actually happy about the fact that the industry is suffering because its changing you know? And obviously if I would have been in the situation I am in right now ten years ago I'd be loaded you know? Because people were! A major artist nowadays sells like, in Germany, a hundred thousand records its considered great you know? But like ten years ago they would have been dropped for that, it would have been a flop because the scales have changed. And that’s cool you know, because people have to find new ways of doing it. I think the music industry was so hedonistic and so….

CFONL: Saturated.

RK: Yeah, saturated, that’s what it is. Well the downside though is, with the Internet and with music software becoming cheaper and more accessible for everybody, there’s a lot of mediocrity out there. I mean, its more democratic in a way, everybody can kind of get their sampler/sequencer thing going on for cheap. Back in the day it was like the bands, you got into a studio and finally got their word out, but not everybody could. But nowadays everybody can just release their forty, fifty tracks. So having a release doesn't mean anything, everybody can constantly release something.

CFONL: That’s also, in a way, empowering for people who are just starting off. What advice would you give to people that are starting in the music industry right now?

RK: That’s a good one. I’d say go for quality you know? Because all these kids that drop a beat tape with 40 or 50 beats on there, and I’m talking to these people saying, "make ten tracks and make them dope!" Why make 50 you know? Why like spam the world with more information, just sit on it a bit longer. Don't be like, just cause the upload goes so fast, here’s another one! here’s another one! Just go in it, be sure, grow on it. And then release it to the world. Don't let any fart of yours go out there you know? Sorry, I’m not hating on anybody.

CFONL: I love it, you can hate on people though.

RK: That’s why people appreciate music less. That’s why they download it and don't buy it. Because there’s so much watered down shit.

CFONL: It’s like a currency, a free currency, and it doesn't mean anything anymore.

RK: Right, and it has to mean something again. And that’s my advice to aspiring musicians and producers would be; make it mean something again and then people will feel it and will wanna pay for it or whatever, you know.

Andreya Triana::Far Closer EP out TODAY!!

We have quite the treat for all you eager music lovers; Andreya Triana!

This girl was blessed with a beautiful voice, and god damn does she know how to use it!! Originally from South East London, Ms. Triana caught her break from The Red Bull Music Academy, in 2006 she was selected from thousands to join their collective down in Australia. We should all take a moment to thank Red Bull Music Academy for choosing her, because without them she may never have met Flying Lotus and they might never have recorded their fucking beautiful collaboration, "Tea Leaf Dancers" [released on FlyLo's Reset EP].

It was this collaboration that caught the attention of Ninja Tune artist Bonobo and in June 2009 she released her debut album, Lost Where I Belong, produced entirely by Bonobo. The album is a the story of her journey that led her to where she is now, even if she is not entirely sure where that is or where she is going to end up. In a world where female soul singers are a dime a dozen, Andreya proves from the very beginning that she is not to be written off as another Lauren Hill or Erykah Badu. She has firmly staked her place, and maybe even carved herself a new niche, in the sultry land of low-fi soul.

Following the release of Lost Where I Belong, she let loose her first EP for the track,"A Town Called Obsolete," which featured a remix by the always amazing, Mount Kimbie!

Her latest release, the Far Closer EP, features remixes by Mr. Scruff and Tokimonsta as well as a live version of the title track. Scion AV Remix Presents: The Dirtbombs

Scion AV must have some amazing people pulling together projects for them, as we see here another moment of progressive thinking in their most current remix series. The Dirtbombs are a pivotal garage/punk/soul outfit from Detroit, fronted by Mick Collins who also led his band The Gories into monumental status with their lo-fi rock n' rolling in the mid 80's and forever on into the future. The Dirtbomb's latest effort, "Party Store" is now out on In The Red Records, and you will find the remixed originals on that delectable release. Being from the Midwest, I thought that everyone called it the "party store," but it wasn't until I read another review of this album that someone mentioned it being a midwest, and even Detroit specific name for the purveyors of liquor, blunt wraps, various munchies and things to help our chemical indulgences. Omar S , a veteran Motor City DJ and producer gives "Sharevari" some signiture Detroit shuffling drums and doesn't stray too far from the amazing original track's format/structure. Ectomorph, also from D-Town, are a duo going back to as early as 1995. Their ephemeral filtery dreamscape of "Jaguar" is a gem, sure to keep the crowd moving or your foot on the gas during a midnight cruise as you imagine the industrial fallout chaos land that may have inspired it. CHUNKY is how I would describe Kyle Hall's
rework of "Bug In The Bassbin." A new face in the Detroit underground, Mr. Hall's production is also choppy and has some really great swirling synths and a solid low end. Cop these fine works here, and the original, here. Peep this video too, I really like it a lot as I feel it is a perfect visual reference to the Dirtbomb's aesthetic, enjoy :)

Travis Stewart is a genius.

His work as Machinedrum is a glitchy haze of electro-futurism, soul claps reminiscent of the boom-bap era and soulful vocals. He has collaborated extensively with underground Hip-Hop artists Theophilus London and Mickey Factz [who have both been blowing up on the blogosphere in last year] and has successfully created his own brand of future-hop-ghetto-funk.

More recently he has delved into the sweat drenched world of juke. Ghettotek, Juke, Footwerk, Booty Bass... they are all very similar. I feel like it is really up to the individual artist to say what the style of music he/she is making is called. Sometimes titles and names can become somewhat of a obstacle, which is why I like all these new "genres" that are emerging, it allows for more creative freedom. But I digress, Machine Drum!! JUKE!!!

So, he made this amazing mix of a shitload of juke/ghettotek classics for the LuckyMe crew and called it, appropriately;

"Footwerk Classixxx Mixxtape."

He then proceeded to put out an album on LuckyMe [in 2010] called, "Many Faces LP," where he blends his own style of neon bass music with the future sounds coming out of the UK right now and also includes tracks like "Lemme F_ck It," that proves he fully understands what it means to make a footwerk classic!

Sepalcure is a collaborative project between Travis Stewart [Machinedrum] & Praveen Sharma [Praveen & Benoit]. Sitting around on a proper lazy feeling Sunday, I was hooking up my home girl with some fresh tunes for her daily commutes when I remembered this...

Which got me to thinking about (and now) doing some posts of older releases I would like to encourage all of you to look into as they have been the soundtrack to many of my most amazing adventures, travels, bus rides, nights in the studio, rhythms to my life etc. Maybe you'll get to know me a little better, and maybe these musical pasts will help us understand where music is going today and into the future, as well as small anecdotes about my personal experience with them.

I first heard "Funcrusher Plus" when around the time Patch was teaching me how to spin vinyl. It was either down in his musical basement cave, standing on massive piles of old NME, Rolling Stone, AP, and XLR8R mags that had spilled all over then place under the decks that I put this on, or perhaps at my place. He did so much for me, letting me borrow his decks, bringing over more and more stacks of records for me to practice with, and this was one that I found and fell in love with. Even after he took his decks and I got my own and started building my collection of 12"'s, I kept this one in my stacks cuz I just loved bumpin the fuck out of it, pissin off my neighbors as I jammed as many speakers in my apartment as I had power for.

Future Genre-Bending Music What??

This is another of Patch's vinyls "I couldn't find" when he was over to take records back to his place. Also, with all the hype recently on the evolution of broken beat music and.......dubstep....... I thought I might toss this one out there for you guys to see what was "progressive" 12 years ago. Here's one of my favorites, the title also relevant to my lazy ass today.

I know the quality is shite at the drop, but maybe that will prompt you to buy it, here.

I was in the woods this weekend? I musta made everyone really sick of this song because I played this (and these crazy new Chris Brown/Benny Bennassi track) like over and over. These two songs have a lot to do with what is going to be "my" big project for the site... The Present State of the Mainstreaming Of Electronica... sounds like a masters thesis doesn't it?

But seriously... is this badass song less awesome because the Beeb is on it? Is the Beeb cooler because people like 'Ye are getting him on their tracks?

And while you're thinking about that is it permissible to be listening to Chris Brown (you know, the guy who beat the fuck out of his super hot girlfriend Rihanna) if Bennassi wrote a scorcher of a radio house track?

Are you gonna cringe and switch teams when that Rusko & Britney Spears track shows up? Or if Diplo takes a couple more mainstream remixes, or productions, are you gonna forsake him (especially after the Blackberry commerical)?

I just put it out there because hip-hop, pop music, and electronica have become a soupy mess that I'm gonna try to pull apart over the next month or so (I wrote a paper about hip-hop and rave culture in the early 2000's that I need to find lol)... although I've gotta admit Simon Reynolds really should be the one writing it. Probably already wrote it lol...

Patrick’s new album is due for release in May 2011 through brand new label, Hideout Recordings, and will be preceded by second single “The City”, on March 14th 2011. The new single will be available for download and on limited edition 7”, with a selection of remixes available on limited edition 12”.

Discussing the new single, Patrick says: “The City’ saved my life. Living in central London, I woke up one broody morning having booked some studio time. It was a hot summers day and in the midst of the protests against the banks and BBC6 Music closing down. Seeing how the recession had worked its way into peoples relationships and ambitions, I went to my piano and started to fight against the negative by writing in the positive.”

The topic here is FREE music. There have been loads of released recently and the most most most recent one is The Streets: "Cyberspace and Reds" which came out in the last 48 hours.

If you scan that with your smartphone you're one step closer to having this free album! I had JUST been thinking "I wonder what Mr Skinner has been up to" as it has been a couple minutes since Everything Is Borrowed which was brilliant and a sort of understated record compared to his previous outings.
The Streets – Cyberspace & Reds (Mixtape) by Hypetrak
The first track comes bursting out with Kano in tow (who I got to see with Gorillaz, who we will also be talking about, this Summer) with "Came In Through The Door", a bouncing 2-step/grime/dubstep killer setting the pace for a wicked mixtape. I'm going to admit I don't actually know anything about the instrumentals on this album... they are probably well known tracks as opposed to unmastered originals from The Beats label (a la "G.O.O.D. Fridays" from KanYe West) although they could be? If anyone knows please say something in the comments or send an email! "Don't Hide Away" is totally single worthy with Wiley, Rinse, and Ice Kid and if this song is any indicator of what Skinner's new album witll be like? He's gonna have a MONSTER on his hands.

Speaking of monsters... Frankmusik put out the wicked psychological-issue-dancefloor-killer "The Fear Inside" at the end of 2010 priming us for a new album from Monsieur Vincent Frank Turner (a fav of sister blog In Search Of Arcadia). Since the dude spits out amazing tracks, with the frequency that the rest of us have bad ideas, he offered up Long Live Frankmusik EP here in January... and it's a good smattering of tracks to let newbies know what he's all about.

It's hard to single out which track is best as he seemingly intentionally grabbed a bunch of tracks that have little similarity to one another in hopes of appealing to a broad audience. A track that cannot be ignored is "Our Discovery", the Daft Punk homage that works in the name of just about every track they've ever written as the lyrics to the song... this leads to it being a tad silly at times, as he tries to string together every title, but the ingenuity of the track is so striking that any silliness is quickly forgotten. The other tracks "Hurt You Again" (an introspective ballad reminiscent of the best moments on his debut), "Warrior" (a piano driven track that feels like a moody version of "Wonder Woman"), and the Digiraattii produced track "Hate Your Love" (which fans have anxiously been awaiting since a Youtube leak over a year ago, that reminds us of another recent killer collabo with Computerclub called "Losing Streak") paint a picture of what Frankmusik has been up to in between the final single off Complete Me and new single "The Fear Inside" and it's, undoubtedly, a promising glance into what his next album might sound like. As far as "free" goes this is VERY generous... but even if it had been $4 it still would be worth every penny so I suggest you go get it while you can... get it here (as apparently he took it down since I downloaded it last week) and get BRAND new track "Steroworld" here (which is part of Long Live Frankmusik PT 2).

ISoA favs Klaxons also put out a killer EP for X-Mas that die hard fans had been eagerly awaiting for quite sometime. As titles for songs destined for Surfing The Void came out many fans made note of the names so they could look for changes between inception and completion (for example: "Valley Of The Calm Trees" not being called "The Parhelion").

If memory serves correctly Landmarks Of Lunacy are left over tracks from working with Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford... and are nothing short of brilliant (P4K diagreed giving the EP 5.7 I think). They are certainly more subdued than most of Surfing The Void but they are no less good. I can see why they were omitted because within the album they wouldn't have made much sense... but as their own collection of songs they take on a certain gravity, if you will, that strengthens each song substantially. Better said: As a whole these songs work well played one after another which they wouldn't have in another environment. Putting them in this order, in this format, at this time was the perfect way to deal with these excess tracks. They could have given it away with "this weeks" NME, or they could have been gimmicky and done a Radiohead asking you to steal/pay for it, or they simply could have asked you to pay for it lol... But by giving away high quality songs, that are in no way throwaway tracks, perfectly sequenced with no price tag, they effectively bought the on going affection of existing fans and perhaps the new found appreciation of skeptics? Anyway you cut it they are wonderful songs with "Silver Forest" standing out as my favourite. Really though they are all wonderful and should be listened to back to back as often as possible :)

Lastly there is The Fall from Gorillaz which was made during, well, the fall lol... it can be downloaded here...

During autumn Gorillaz were touring this fair nation and were really taken by the U.S. so Damon made a whole album with an iPad! Each track is named after the cities they toured in (so "Detroit" and "Shytown" are my favs as they are the two closest to me... I went to the Chicago show and it was beyond words). The songs are very short but any offering from Gorillaz is bound to be interesting so I don't even need to tell you much about it lol... but in case you needed info here's some from Wiki:

"The Fall is an album from British alternative group Gorillaz. The album was officially announced on December 20, 2010[1] and soon after released on December 25, 2010 as a free download on the Gorillaz website, exclusively to fans in the band's Sub-Division fan club. The entire album was recorded on group founder Damon Albarn's Apple iPad, during the American leg of the Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour in October 2010, and mixed in England by Stephen Sedgwick. The "Phoner to Arizona" music video, a compilation of footage and images taken from the tour and the phase was posted on YouTube on December 22. Physical release huh? Reminds me of Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts I-IV or whatever that was called. Perhaps I need to revisit that slice of free music as I know nothing about it despite having it...

Since I've written all this about free music... do you download free music only to never bother listening to it? I mean I downloaded that NIN album but I probably listened to 5 minutes of it? Same thing with the last Girl Talk album... it gave me "Radiohead style options" and I downloaded it saying "I'll pay for it if I like it" and, again, I probably listened to like 5 minutes and then was bored with it. So, again, I pose the question... do you usually listen to free music? Does it age well like fine wine, or does it go bad like a keg of Milwaukee's Best at a frat house between Thanksgiving and Christmas?

I can tell you all these EPs/albums/offerings that I've gone over in this post have my full attention and I give them all a strong 5 star rating or I wouldn't have posted them and associated myself or my blogs with them! But I'm interested as to what you think of these albums and other free albums... so please leave comments...

Zander brought to my attention there are other free digital comps from Skream, Nastynasty, Terror Danjah, The Butterz Crew... and Tyler reminded me of M.I.A.'s "Vicki Leekx" mixtape and other killers like "kills" by jj... so there are obviously other killers... what have you been listening to (other than the HOLY GRAIL of free recordings KanYe West's G.O.O.D. Fridays; a free album almost as good as it's non-free counterpart My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy *perhaps the greatest album ever written*...

We have all heard that country cover of Snoop's, "Gin&Juice," and yeah, we laughed. Maybe you have even heard Cake covering the disco classic, "I will survive." But this is on another level.
Part remix, part cover. Part pop music, part hip-hop. Entirely amazing!

jj is an electro-pop duo living and making their magic in sweden. Earlier this year they toured with The XX and their debut album [jj no. 2] was included in Pitchfork's Best New Music list in 2009 and received a solid 8.6 rating. Their most recent release is the hip-hop&pop sampling, spaced out, angel voiced mixtape entitled, "kills." Basically they remix/cover a bunch of pop and rap music. I may be biased, but my favorite track is the Dr. Dre sampling, "Still." Not much introduction needed for this track, just sit back, blaze it up for the West and enjoy this hipop music!

Random post of songs I'm relaxing to... nothing new... but who fucking cares?

I feel a real closeness to this song. A lot of people think it's negative? I don't! They're just really honest lyrics. "I might not be the right one, it might not be the right time" does NOT mean "I don't love you"... in fact in means the opposite in this clip... "I need you more than anyone in my life"...

Apparently there is no real video for this... this is someone's home video... but the song is what we were looking for. Also check out Diplo's 2010 remix...

And then I'm not usually into live shit... but I met Tricky on this tour and his performance was amazing. Did you know he wanted Aaliyah to sing this song? And that the song is roughly about Biggie and 2pac? Oh yeah, and he's a nice bloke Tricky... you always hear he's a paranoid prick but he hung out with me for like 10 minutes smoking in an alley... for a 16 year old that's a big deal lol. I just happened to have EVERY album of his on me. He signed em all, I kept one, gave one to my best friend, the boy he wanted to sleep with, and eventually my ex-girlfriend. Anyway, I digress...

Lights, Lights, and more Lights...

I've been on a non-stop Kanye West kick. Whenever I say that people are like "He's an arrogant asshole" and I'm like "Yeah he should be, he's like a super genius! Fuck Einstein should have acted like Kanye, in fact he probably did!"...

If you haven't seen his epic, albeit slightly flawed (just the editing really before the end) Runaway movie you need to peep that before we go forward...

So anyway... the Kanye "Lights" songs... I think they're my favourites. No huge surprise right? I mean the blog is called "Neon Lights" right? It's even a topic that I end up having these weird long conversations about with artists (most notably Kenna; some high school students out there have a copy of that interview which I really wish I had). I just think lights change everything about atmosphere, and how you feel... go look at a nightclub during the day when there are no lights and then come back at night... or take a look at Tokyo at day and at night you know? Lights can be full of emotion or icy cold nothingness. So, anyway, this is why these Kanye songs really do it for me..........

The first was the soul baring "Flashing Lights" about him cheating on his girl, getting caught, begging for her back, and realizing he's lost everything (but still hasn't given up his ego).

Then we have "Street Lights"... Kanye's accepting where he's at in an album that is full of loss and turmoil (coming to terms with his ego)...

And lastly there's the brilliant new "All Of the Lights" which has like 20 people singing on it... and is the most recent in his series of songs dedicated to the symbolism of lights. He gets a little more specific in this one...

Anyway I think he's done a great job at creating a thematic thread through his last few albums that explain, or expose, his artistic and personal positions. Plus they're all badass songs you want to listen to over and over. Or at least I do.

I want to point out that it's hilarious, one of the only posts on this blog in the last few years was also about Kanye West... but why do I care?!? I run this bitch! Anyway this was just a ramble... I'm trying to get used to writing and I'd rather do it over here at this relatively "virgin" blog than my "baby" ISoA.

I do hope for this blog to get a make over and a team of badass people working on this... and we're getting close! So keep your eyes and ears fixed on this spot and hopefully the next post won't be able Kanye West... again lol...

So yesterday I ended up having to blow off both getting new glasses and going to WIDR FM's "Barking Tuna Festival" which had Black Moth Super Rainbow as well as Mates Of State, and Daestro (I think he was there). I initially was supposed to interview School of 7 Bells (who have a really good album coming out I might add) but apparently there was a mis-communication about the fact that they were playing our festival?!? I had decided to skip going to see Wire in Chicago because of this (and financial issues and what have you) so I was pretty bummed when they revealed they weren't going to be coming.

I had decided to go to the festival any way because all my friends were going to be there... but then I realized I was REALLY broke this week and I didn't feel too well either. I tried to stay home and sleep but couldn't really... I can't sleep without my wife around. I'm serious. So instead I downloaded songs and just relaxed a little.

In other news I've gotta say the SVIIB album is quite good... I had to go to great lengths to procure it (as I thought I'd be interviewing them and ought to know what their new album sounded like) and I know for sure I'll buy it now when it comes out. I'm also downloading the new Michna album as we speak, and have been enjoy the remix album The Chap put out... expect to hear some of those remixes on 'The Spirit Of Albion'. I love me some Ghostly International records. Spectral Sound has been putting out new records as well... they've got loads of new stuff in their store... Matthew Dear released a the Robsoul Remixes and the "Pom Pom single. I can't wait to see what the Ghostly Box will be this Christmas! I'm such a Ghostly addict... I'm still trying to convince my wife to buy me the black Ghostly Nooka watch for Xmas hehehe...

Taking a small break from 'Arcadia'... I'm pretty much writing everyday now, so I figure I'll keep my fingers nimble by writing non-stop, and hook you guys up with some non-British goodies.

I didn't watch the VMA's last night. Why? Because I could give a fuck. I don't mean that in a 17 year old raging against corporate America type way... fuck I love pop music and rap both of which are MTV's primary format... I just don't happen to like most of the pop or rap artists MTV plays. You know? I like, no LOVE, Kanye West (he's my fucking idol)... I dig Weezy. Shit there's a lot of shit I listen to that you would never guess I liked. It's just, that MTV shit isn't cutting it. Remember when MTV had Prodigy LIVE on the 10 Spot? Or when they premiered the "Lucky Man" video by the Verve? Or when you could catch Massive Attack and Manic Street Preachers back to back? No? I'm getting old then.

Anyway... Mr. West did knock it out of the park yesterday, however, when he performed "Love Lockdown" at the VMA's. When I saw that he played a new track last night I was more than interested... 'Ye seemed to be getting REALLY good at singing when we saw him in Chicago and this is a perfect example of his new skills... I mean the man really seems to have some pipes. Not "Spaceship" type singing, but rather if he had sung the chorus to "Good Life" by himself... so here's an MPFree copy of the stream, along with the stream itself...

Muscles, RSD, and the 'future' of MUSIC...

So there are a couple of songs that are like bee's in my bonnet right now that I just have to get out an post. They don't fit the 'Arcadia' criteria SO they are going to get posted here!

First off is by RSD called "Love Of Jah Light". It's beautiful shimmering dubstep that sounds like Bexar Bexar... something you listen to on the beach (or something you listen to to REMIND you of the beach.

I mean, I (probably not unlike you) had the Burial album before it came out... and I just downloaded it on eMusic. Why would I do that if I already had a copy? Because we have to show the industry that we LOVE music and want to support a system where free songs make you want to buy the album. We have to show them that a place like eMusic (where you can get songs for roughly a quarter or less) works as opposed to $20 an album at Barnes & Noble. So please purchase songs you hear on this site (or any site) that you enjoy if you get them for free. This goes for this song and the next song and all the ones that follow...

Second thing that I'm REALLY into is this new shit by Muscles. Everyone knew it was going to be fire because it was coming out on Modular but we seriously have a totally awesome hybrid of Cut Copy/The Streets now that hetero males won't be afraid to be caught listening to. I'm going to post a good song I think won't be a single as opposed to "Marshmallows" which I think the label would make us take down (because it's THAT GOOD)!

So I have mainly been tending to my baby "In Search Of Arcadia"... but recently Thelonious Punk (it's up to him if he give his real name) and I have been talking about starting a new blog... just to let people know what we're being influenced by as we are doing the whole Project 2501/State Crime thing. And I figured, "Well hell, I've already got a nice blog with a good title sitting around, let's use that!". I've always wanted to have a blog where I could post ANYTHING (not just British Music like my other blog... and now I've got it, AND it's tied into everything else I'm doing in the DJ realm!

...Along with this page we've got a Google homepage we're working on, trying to find a good place to start up a forum, and have like a million other things under our collective hat that we're getting ready to unleash on the world...

I've always wanted to have a public (let me say that again, public blog, seeing as I can't very well share the private one *wink*) blog that I could write with someone else so I guess here's my chance! Maybe if I work hard with this and the other blog they'll let me guest edit some day at Palms Out Sounds or Missing Toof lol... maybe if we work hard enough we'll be the next Acid Girls... ok ok ok I won't get ahead of myself. Equally 'ravey' is this song by DQ1 called "Structive" that I'm digging on... it's been out for a while but I just got a legit version over at eMusic. You can also get that Martin Buttrich over there as well (not to mention that new Matthew Dear which is hot, but I would feel guilty posting).

While we are on that dubstep tip... we did a nice little dubstep mix... nothing too long or too complex... just a something nice to showcase what we were listening to this summer. The original idea was to get on top of the 'ravestep' phenomenon by mixing 20 mins of dubstep and 20 mins of techno... instead *cough* here are the two separate mixes lol... WE DIDN'T GIVE OURSELVES ENOUGH TIME AND WE'RE STILL RECORDING LIKE 24 HOURS BEFORE IT HAD TO BE DONE lol... at least we still mix our records instead of pushing them through Ableton or something!

Crazy holidays... it was really fun stuff though. I've been working CRAZY style on the album as well so it's been a really busy month. I'm really looking forward to this next year... hopefully this will be the one where everything finally blows up... you cross your fingers... because if I get signed I can afford to really bring you some quality shit on this blog!

Speaking of writing this album... I thought I would throw up some of the stuff I've been listening to... some of my recent influences... stuff that in some way, shape, or form, my new stuff sounds (or is trying to sound) like...

First off is one of my faves off the Audion album. I love Matthew Dear to death and REALLY wish I would have stayed to see him at Pitchfork this summer (it was just WAYYYY too hot)... I did get to see him open for Swayzak, however, back in 2004 which was really cool. This song really gets me going, along with a couple others on that album. I wanted to post something from "Just A Man/Just A Woman" but I didn't want to piss the label off. This is on Ghostly International and you can purchase the album on eMusic.
Audion- "Titty Fuck"

Then I've got a track from Lusine who I've REALLY been getting into in the last month. The sort of texture in these songs is something I'm working really hard on and no QUITE getting... but I will keep peeping these songs until I figure it out. This album is fantastic 'doing-it-music'... in my opinion... this ALSO on Ghostly International... go cop it at eMusic!

My new music idol is Outputmessage. I've been trying to make his album the whole time I've been writing songs. His music is lush, serene, perfection. These undulating wave of sythetic emotion run through every single song on his album. I'm chomping at the bit to have my eMusic subscription refill for the month so I can get his first album... I had to pick the 2nd one up on iTunes. I also went to Shop Ghostly early and picked up a record he did a remix for. I really want to be this guy.

Then I've been spending a lot of time getting back to my roots... the dark electronic stuff that my childhood was filled with. Heather bought me a box set called "A Life Less Lived" which has LOADS of stuff that falls under that tag and I REALLY love it. I also downloaded Movement by New Order, and have been going back through my Depeche Mode albums and really absorbing all that stuff. Here's a couple choice cuts from the 80's...

Just a heads up... Depeche Mode just realeased their FULL discography on iTunes. So if you have about $170 to blow and want like every single thing they have ever done ever, including remixes, demos, and b-sides, then you should head over there and check that out!

So... you may have seen my pride and joy blog In Search Of Arcadia before... which I hope you have enjoyed... but as much as I love it... I feel like I need another outlet to talk about music. I mean don't get me wrong... I LOVE BRITISH MUSIC... it is my end-all-be-all, BUT, there is other music I like. Sometimes it's grime, sometimes is house music, sometimes it's garage rock, sometimes it's old school stuff... and I want to be able to write about that, but it's just not appropriate over at Arcadia. So I will post here from time to time, throwing up my new faves from all over the place. I cannot promise that I'm going to put as much energy into the look of this site... but then again... you probably don't care... you're probably just looking for the song link. And I can't blame you as this is my 'vanity project' but hopefully some of the words will be enjoyable for you too. OKAY, on to the music!

First off is Bexar Bexar... a VERY underrated band... so underrated I don't know if anyone knows about them. I've never heard anyone talk about them but I love them so, so, so, so, so much. I would say this gets played most of the time when I'm in my bedroom not sleeping. The whole album Haralambos is perfect front to back and highly recommend it to people who like Boards Of Canada's non-glitchy songs.... because this is more like folktronica... or something... I don't know what folktronica is really but I would throw this in there lol.
Bexar Bexar- "Aidos"

Speaking of Boards Of Canada, have you heard Trans Canada Highway? It's a pretty nifty little stop-gap recording to tide you over intbetween the last one and the new one (whenever that comes out)... I thought I post "Skyliner" which is probably the most exciting track off the recent E.P.

All of this wonderful lazy-Sunday-fucking-music reminds me of a band I really listened to in years... or at least I haven't heard this Tortoise song in at least 8 years because I left the cd in Brian Perkins car on the way back from seeing Tricky at the Vic in 1998. The seminal Chicago band can easily go toe to toe with any other instrumental group out there, and frankly they have had longevity that few of their contemporaries have had. This song is like part Ennio Morricone and part Portishead... anyway you look at it, it's all good. I used to sit around and get wasted at the older kids dorm (at Interlochen Arts Academy) and listen to this cd on repeat while looking at soft porn with Matt Buck... ahhhhh those were the days.

Tortoise- "Along The Banks Of The River"

Next... I'll get away from the straight instrumental thing... but this music is pretty low key so it would probably fit on a mix with the prior songs. I don't really need to say anything about Interpol. At all. If you don't know anything about Interpol you must be like a 13 year old girl without the internet or something. Because they are the most super hyped indie band in the world ever who had loads and loads of exposure and played every venue on earth in support of their 2nd record... including the ICA in 2004... which is where this gem came from...
